There is pain and hope

January 23, 2023

I was recently asked to share pictures of the kittens that introduced me to the horrors of FIP.   I look at this composite picture and I feel great sorrow at the deaths of Peanut and Miss Bean.  Especially Miss Bean, who endured 4 weeks of the drug trial without ever losing her kitten desire to play.  But Smokey makes this picture one of Hope.  Even though we know Smokeys future is unknowable, every day is a victory against FIP and a day I get to spend with this most amazing kitten. I know so many are still dying but we can win this fight.    Below this picture is a rather long video showing the decline of Miss Bean.  It is very sad and hard to watch but I want to share what a strong kitten Miss Bean was.

Peanut - Miss Bean - Smokey

The video below is of Miss Bean. It is unedited (except for shortening the length) and shows her when she was strong, and then as that strength was slowly taken from her by FIP.  The first part of the video was taken the morning we thought we were going to have to euthanize her but instead, ended up getting her enrolled in the UC Davis drug trial.  In another part you can hear Dr Pedersen explaining about FIP to students as Miss Bean and I sit and listen.  The music I added was one of Miss Beans favorite songs. Just like in this video, the song would play on a loop for hours as we lay on the floor and listened.

This video may not be easy to watch for some.  But to me, even as Miss Bean declined, we still had hope.  The doctors learned a lot from Miss Bean that will help many other kittens avoid her fate.  I have hours and hours of memories of those last 4 weeks of her life and a few videos like this one. I just want her to be remembered as a very brave FIP Warrior who never gave up.  She just wanted to do kitten things.  She is missed.
