FIP Warrior:

Tuna

My boyfriend, Kenny and I adopted Tuna when he was about 4 months old at the end of December 2018. As a kitten he was always very sweet but never playful. He would lay around for hours just sleeping. Kenny and I thought he might just be lazy or bored, so we rescued another kitten as a companion. He started playing a little more, but not much changed (even though she was a crazy girl lol). Around August/September 2019, Tuna started showing what we now realize was ocular symptoms: blurry eyes, redness, swelling. The vet gave him some steroid drops and he improved. But the symptoms came back hard and fast in October. In the span of 2 weeks he lost about 2 pounds, slept all day, and started to lose the function of his back legs. On Halloween, he was diagnosed with dry, ocular and neurological FIP. Luckily, we were able to get started with Shire right away. We saw significant improvements within the first week and we knew this treatment worked. At the beginning of treatment, he weighed only 7 pounds. Now, 63 days in, he is at 11 pounds and still growing. The downside to this miracle is that the medicine is incredibly expensive considering his diagnosis and weight. At the lowest neuro dose, he should be getting 2.66 mL a day. That’s more than half of one $80-$180 vial, and even then I would prefer to have him on the highest dose, 3.33 mL. At this point, we have completely exhausted all funds. I have defaulted on my student loans, maxed out my credit cards, and borrowed money from family and friends. My teacher’s salary sadly isn’t enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don’t want Tuna to stop treatment for fear of relapse but I literally cannot afford anymore at this time. He only has 21 days left. I need to make it count for his sake. Thank you. ❤️
