FIP Warrior:

Socrates

Socrates and his sister, Hypatia, came into our lives 13 years ago when we found them scared and abandoned on a recreational trail near our house. We brought them home to acclimate to a household of children and pets, thinking they would be easier to adopt, but they became a permanent part of our household. From day one, Socrates would sleep on the pillow above my head with one paw touching me at all times. He would watch out the door when I left for work and come running to the door as my car pulled into the drive. He has been my constant little gray and white shadow! An indoor/outdoor cat, Socs took great pride in his territory. Several years ago, after a scrape, we discovered he was FIV+. But he was happy and otherwise healthy and all was well. Fast forward to December 2020. The world was in the midst of a pandemic and our little guy stopped eating. We tried antibiotics, but it didn't help, and while he lost weight, his belly inflated with fluid. He was diagnosed with wet FIP on December 16, and the vet sent him home with us to have time to say goodbye. She thought he had days, maybe a week. We were devastated. The world around us was grieving and so were we. But in our conversation, the vet also said something about an experimental treatment. After spending the night in tears, hugging and rocking our little guy, we made the decision to try the experimental treatment. With the help of family, we located someone who could help us navigate this new world and began GS treatments that night! An angel of mercy met us in a parking lot with vials of clear liquid, needles, and syringes and helped us to get started. We didn't have time to delay; he was fading fast. We continued the injections every night, hand feeding him baby food a spoonful at a time. We took turns sleeping with him in the recliner because we were afraid he would pass away in the night, cold and alone. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, he got better! After two weeks, the fluid in his belly disappeared. He gradually began to eat more and regain strength. He got stronger and gained weight. His bloodwork looked like that of a completely healthy cat! On March 10, 2021, we completed his 84 days of injections and entered observation. He has become even more affectionate than before, even though his outdoor time is restricted and strictly monitored. And he still watches me leave for work and waits for me by the door every day when I come home!
