FIP Warrior:

Oliver

Oliver was rescued at the age of 3.5 months by my daughter in late November 2019 from a group of cats living outdoors. He was given a clean bill of health by the vet and completed his vaccinations in December 2019. On 1/12/20 I noticed his swollen belly and took him in to the vet on 1/15/20 where he was diagnosed with wet FIP, something I had never heard of. The vet put him on prednisolone and said we'd eventually have to euthanize him. She mentioned a clinical trial and seeing what she could find out about the medicine but updated me that it had ended and the medication was only available from China on the black market. It was devastating news for us. Over the next several days I researched this disease and treatment and found the FIP Warriors group on Facebook. As a family we committed to Oliver's treatment. One of the group administrators assisted me in obtaining the GS medication and Oliver began his recovery on 1/24/20. Oliver never lost his appetite, always drank well and used the litter box properly. So I believe we caught it early. His belly began noticeably decreasing after 6 doses and appeared completely back to normal after 11 doses. I took him to the vet after 4 weeks for blood work and almost everything was back to normal. I informed the vet about the treatment and she was very excited about the results. We are currently at 38/84 days of treatment. After about 2 weeks of treatment he was back to the playful kitten he had been, chasing his toys and wrestling around with my 4.5 year old cat, Aragorn. So looking forward to April 16th for his last shot.

UPDATE 07142020

Oliver had his last shot on April 16th, 2020. We followed up with normal blood work results on April 17th, 2020, and entered the 12 week observation period. It was nerve-wracking at first but Oliver continued to be healthy. We did a mid-period blood work up during observation at the 6 week point and everything was normal and healthy. We finally reached the end of the observation period with another normal blood lab result and declared Oliver cured on July 10th, 2020.  Oliver will celebrate his first birthday on August 15th, 2020.

We are so grateful to everyone in the FIP Warriors group on Facebook, administrators, moderators, fellow FIP Warrior parents. The group is awesome and by far the best group of people I have ever run across in social media.

Thank you for your support in the efforts to cure our kitties and raise awareness.

UPDATE 02102023

Oliver was reinfected about 3.5 months after being cured the first time from wet FIP. One of those almost unheard of situations where I had better odds of winning the lottery (why didn't I play? lol). He began to present with neurological issues near the end of October 2020 and I took him to the emergency vet on a Saturday. The blood work was inconclusive for FIP markers but after discussing with my admin from the previous round we decided to restart treament at the neuro dosage. We began on 1 November 2020. He continued to decline for over a month until I requested a different brand of the medication affter which his recovery took off. Due to the higher dosage, his increasing weight, and increased difficulty getting injections done, we switched to pills for the last 6 or 8 weeks. We extended several weeks just to get the blood work near perfect and so I could get him neutered. Treatment finally ended on 11 March 2021 and observation began. Blood work remained normal and stable and on 4 June 2021 Oliver was declared cured for the second time. He has been happy and healthy since. He does have some lingering effects of neuro damage, he can be a little wobbly at times but is a very playful and loving boy. Almost two years cured now after a long and expensive ride but so very happy to have him still around.
