FIP Warrior:

Gobble

At the first of the new year we noticed Gobble, the kitten we adopted the day before Thanksgiving, was looking round in his belly. That progressed over the next week and he was at the vet January 10, 2020. He presented lethargic, with a fever of 103.8, and after X-rays an abdomen full of fluid. He was struggling to breathe from the fluid pressing on his diaphragm and we knew he would be in respiratory distress soon. His appetite was dropping and all he could do was lie around the house from the high fever. Gobble was scheduled for an ultrasound January 14 to rule out any organ issue that could possibly explain the fluid, but the likely diagnosis was wet FIP. It was the worst news I could receive from our vet. I cried all the way home wondering how I was going to break this news to my husband, who had already fallen in love with our new orange kitten. BUT, I was lucky enough to be directed to FIP Warriors, an FIP Facebook page, and was immediately overwhelmed with information and responses from the community. My husband and I discussed our options over the weekend and had Mutian, a new FIP anti-viral drug, overnighted January 13, expecting his ultrasound would point to FIP. With no organ issue found we started Mutian capsules the day of the ultrasound. Up until a year ago FIP has always been a death sentence for cats. Gobble’s fever broke 18 hours after his first dose and all of his abdominal fluid was gone within a week. It was like a miracle drug!! Within two weeks he seemed like a normal kitten again. He continued to do well through treatment and has put on 3 pounds in 84 days. Not one person who has been at our house realized just how sick Gobble was! He appeared totally normal that quickly. People were shocked when we told them he had been diagnosed with a fatal disease. After 12 weekly B12 injections and 84 days of Mutian capsules we are done! His bloodwork is totally normal and his X-rays look great! I’m so grateful Gobble had a chance to survive. He was only 4 months old when he was diagnosed with wet FIP and it would have broken all of our hearts to euthanize him. I lost my first kitten, Ashes, I adopted to dry/ocular FIP 25 years ago. I’ve thought about her a lot through this process. There was no treatment for her in 1995. I would have done anything back then to save her just as we’ve done all we could to give Gobble a chance at life!! To look at Gobble now purring, playing and chasing our kids around the house, you would never know how sick he was. He was literally brought back from the brink of death. Our hope is that Gobble will have many happy years with our family and other kitty, Pancake. Without Mutian he would have been euthanized a week or two after his diagnosis. We will be forever grateful to FIP Warriors and Mutian!
