FIP Warrior:

Cholula (Lulu)

My sweet girl Lulu got diagnosed with FIP on 1/11/24. About the week or so prior to that point we noticed she wasn’t eating as much but I assumed that it was because my other cat Lili can be kinda a bully about her food and I thought that maybe she just wasn’t getting to eat enough bc her sister was eating more than she should be. So I started separating them when I would give Lulu her wet food but she still seemed to be loosing weight. On the 10th of January I noticed her belly was huge and bloated and i instantly panicked considering she was so scrawny and all belly. It seemed like her growth had just stopped even though she was still eating it’s like she wasn’t getting any more weight on her and now her belly was bloated. I called the vet and got her an appointment for the next day since I could not afford the emergency vet. When I took her in the vet immediately said they thought that the bloating was from fluid build up and that if it was that it was most likely FIP. The only test that I could afford the day of was for the X-ray to confirm if it was indeed fluid build up. The vet confirmed that it was and told me that she had FIP, Lulu had also had so much feces in her colon backed up the had to give the poor girl an enema and subcutaneous fluids to help her go and not dehydrate. The vet basically told me that all they could offer was to provide supportive care throughout this process and left me feeling very hopeless and heartbroken that my little girl was so sick. She was having such a hard time going potty and she was barely eating. The first few days were really hard. We got our hands on treatment as soon as we could and she started her treatment on 1/13. She started with injections but I live alone for the most part and I could not administer her injections alone, my boyfriend helped me for the first few days before we started her on pills. Today 2/9 is day 28. Between then and today we’ve had to take her to the vet for bloodwork twice, on 1/16 she had to go on amoxicillin and prednisolone and she has had to eat double the amount of wet food in efforts to get her to gain some weight back. She had been eating her litter which we then had to switch to pee pads in the litter box for about a week or so but thankfully the pills that she’s been taking and those first few days of injections have made a big difference. She has stopped eating her litter and has gone back to a normal litter box. She has gained some healthy weight and a good amount of bloating has gone down. She seems to be going potty normally and has been excited to eat and has a good appetite. It’s been hard because her sister will try to eat her food if I don’t seclude her in the bathroom for feeding time, but Lulu has now gained enough energy that she’s not a fan of being in the bathroom during food time when the rest of the apartment is much more exciting. So we have been having some struggles getting her to want to go in to eat but each day she gets a little more energy and each day I keep hoping for the best. Her last vet visit was on 2/1 and the bloodwork came back with only a few proteins slightly elevated but considering the fact she has FIP so vet said that was good! She has continued to gain more strength and energy and is playing more and becoming more like herself each day of treatment but we are not even halfway there yet and it continues to be a financial burden. The amount of money raised has only covered the vet bills and supplies so far, we still have a long way to go to be able to afford treatment.
